Background
The 65er yearly thing started with a photo in 1995
that was taken one Sunday after breakfast as we headed for Brian's house
before people had to leave for home. (See the 1999 recap below.) We
wanted to take pictures of the kids born in Richland at the hospital.
Unfortunately, by the time we got around to going over to take the
picture, most everyone had already left for BJ's. Anyway, six of us
ended up at the hospital for the picture. Along came Keeney, who was
born in Idaho but, what the heck, we couldn't exclude him. So that's how
it started. Warford suggested we get together every year and we have.
1998
The class of '65 took a group conscience when we heard that the annual
car show and Rock n Roll show (Cool Summer Nights) was being held the
week-end of June 18-20 and has decided to change the yearly gathering
this year to that week-end... that way we have built in entertainment.
That is not to say that Les Brown's Concert with the Associations was
not GREAT last year...in fact it was so good, it contributed to our
decision to do the car show etc. this year. Rooms go fast and we've
blocked ours out at the Hampton so you may want to set it up quickly if
you want to hit that week-end with the '65ers!
If you don't see us hanging around, call my room... Steve Simpson's
room... Terry Davis' (Knox) room, or Jim Heidlebaugh's room... you gotta
find one of us... or call Tony Harrah at his sister's ... Warford at his
Dad's... Keeney at 2 Bits... Pete Carroll at Richland Bell Furn....
Adair at home. In other words, YOU CAN'T MISS US! Hope to see you
all there!
Normally we:
- Friday evening: meet on deck ~ go to dinner in a
group
- Saturday morning and afternoon: Spudnut ~ breakfast
~ swim ~ boat ~ whatever!
- Saturday night: Party, etc.
- Sunday Breakfast ... then to Brian's to visit
1999
In 1999, we
decided that we would try something new. Instead of holding the
gathering on the 2nd weekend in August, we held it in June during Cool
Desert Nights. What a great idea! This way, the events would start on
Thursday with a car show - night cruises on Thursday thru Saturday and
street dances Friday and Saturday nights.
1999 was the unveiling of the commemorative 1996 "Sorry
7" T-shirt produced by that great artist from '65, James
Le Heidlebaugh. Of course the shirts were supposed to have been
unveiled a few years earlier, but what's a few years among friends?
Besides, if they'd been done on time, Warford (who missed the last 2
years) wouldn't have gotten his.
As the great weekend approached, I was in a rather long jury trial. I
had yet to miss the yearly gathering and was not inclined to miss this
one. As luck would have it, the case went to the jury on Friday
afternoon and I couldn't make it. Luckily, I had met up with Leonardo
... I mean Heidlebaugh ... ahead of time and fetched a shirt for Davis
and me. Terry modeled his shirt
after a fight at the Mandalay in Las Vegas. Bob Aram was nice enough to
give tickets to my friend Bo Belinski, Terry and me to see Terry's
favorite fighter, Johnny Tapia lose his crown ... (bummer).
As usual, the event closed with breakfast
for 20 at the Red Lion, before heading to Brian's house for the
basketball game and Terry's annual "Moon" before people headed
out of town. Unfortunately, Heidlebaugh was the only one to show, so it
was breakfast for one at a table for 20. During the week, Heidlebaugh
was heard to grumble over and over about the lack of "adult
supervision" in true beta male fashion. And Jimmy had just had his
new teeth cleaned and his hat pressed for the occasion.
This year is our 65ers' 35th so there will be no "annual"
gathering. But not to fear, we have pledged to continue the affair till
the last one gets the bottle, as Harrah put it.
